Exploring Norfolk’s Hidden Gems from Our Cottage
If you're spending a few days exploring Norwich during your stay with us, one place we always recommend is Strangers’ Hall – and not just because it’s a beautiful old building (though it really is). It’s one of those rare places that manages to be both quietly fascinating and completely unpretentious – the kind of spot that’s perfect for a slow afternoon when you want to soak up some history without fighting your way through crowds.
Tucked away just off Charing Cross in the heart of the city, Strangers’ Hall is one of Norwich’s oldest buildings, dating all the way back to the 1300s. It’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it – and in many ways, that’s part of the charm. You step through the door and suddenly you’re in another world.
The Hall is set out like a lived-in house rather than a traditional museum. Each room is styled to show how it might have looked during different periods in Norwich’s long and varied history – from Tudor parlours to Victorian drawing rooms. You get a real sense of how people actually lived, and there are all sorts of quirky details to spot – from old shoe buckles and bed warmers to some rather grand (and occasionally bizarre) furniture.
There’s a lovely human scale to the place. It’s not huge or overwhelming. You can take your time wandering through the wood-panelled rooms, climbing the narrow staircases, and peeking into corners you’re not quite sure you’re allowed in (you probably are!). The volunteers who run the Hall are always happy to chat and share stories – and they really know their stuff.
The name "Strangers’ Hall" comes from the Protestant refugees – known locally as “Strangers” – who came to Norwich from the Low Countries (what we now call Belgium and the Netherlands) in the 16th century. They were invited here to boost the textile trade, and their arrival left a lasting mark on the city. So not only are you looking at a beautiful old house, you're also standing in a spot that tells a much bigger story about migration, trade, and community.
It’s especially magical at Christmas, when they decorate the Hall with greenery and candles – it feels like you’ve walked straight into a Charles Dickens novel. But honestly, it’s worth visiting any time of year.
