If you’re planning a day out during your stay, the newly restored Norwich Castle is absolutely worth the trip.
After several years behind scaffolding, it’s finally reopened — and it’s looking better than ever.
Originally built by the Normans over 900 years ago, Norwich Castle has always been an iconic part of the city skyline. But thanks to a major renovation project, visitors can now experience the castle in a completely new way. The project, called “Royal Palace Reborn,” has taken the Keep back to its roots, bringing to life what it would have felt like to walk through the royal chambers in the time of William the Conqueror and Henry I. The transformation is striking — not just a facelift, but a full reimagining of the castle's interior spaces.
One of the most exciting changes is that you can now explore the castle from basement to battlements. There’s even a new lift, so much more of the building is accessible to everyone, and the views from the top are stunning. Inside, you’ll find the Great Hall fully reconstructed, along with royal rooms and exhibitions designed in partnership with the British Museum. If you’ve visited before, it will feel completely different — richer, more immersive, and far more engaging.
The renovation hasn’t just focused on the Keep. The visitor areas have had a big upgrade too. There's a new entrance atrium that feels bright and open, a shop, better facilities, and a café where you can relax after exploring.
If you’re staying with us at The Norfolk Broads Cottage, Norwich is only about 30 minutes away by car or train, and the castle is right in the centre of the city, making it easy to combine with other sights like the market, cathedral, or a riverside walk. It’s perfect for a half-day or full-day visit. You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy it — just curious.
To plan your visit, check their official website for up-to-date information, including opening hours, events and exhibitions: www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk/norwich-castle
So if you wake up to a cloudy morning or just fancy a change of pace from the Broads, Norwich Castle is a great option. It’s a slice of history brought to life — and now better than ever.
